After some research and experiment, I found the best way to save a smoothie for later.
One of my favorite time-savers!
I love making a double batch of smoothies in the morning so that I have one handy for lunchtime or later in the day. I remember the first time I carefully made my smoothie, drank half, and then put the remainder in the refrigerator. Several hours later I retrieved my smoothie from the fridge only to find that it looked gross and unappetizing. Yuck!
- Look for an airtight container or jar. After making your smoothie, you want to fill the jar or container to the very top to prevent air from being trapped inside. Air will oxidize the nutrients thus thus turning it an unflattering color. I prefer a mason jar and after searching for several months, found the perfect one. They are certified BPA free and lead free and the glass straw (genius) is made from the same glass Pyrex is made from. This allows you to confirm that nothing is left behind in the straw from your last smoothie and the jar, lids, and straw are all dishwasher safe. Be sure to pick the right size jar for the amount of smoothie you are saving so that you can fill it to the very top.
- Add lemon juice or even better, add the lemon peel too. The extra vitamin C will help prevent oxidation and using the peel will give you extra fiber, antioxidants, and is a great boost for your immune system.
- Smoothies will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
Enjoy!
