It happens every holiday. The stress of trying to come up with a gift for that person that does not need or want anything, recently downsized or you happen to know their home is close to becoming a hoarding situation.
After moving my mother into assisted living, I have spent the last several months packing, unpacking, sorting, donating, and trying to find a spot for items I have been guilted into keeping. So this holiday season, I am not looking to add more “stuff” to my overcrowded closets or find a spot for one more knick-knack.
Chances are, you will have friends and family on your holiday shopping list that feel the same way.
When shopping for gifts for my friends and family, I like to stop and consider the following:
-Am I positive they would want this gift and use it?
-Do they have space for the item?
-Am I buying this gift because I cannot come up with anything else?
Don’t fall into the retail trap.
Television commercials, ads, and even the radio all aim to tell us what to purchase to show how much we care. They encourage us to fill our carts with small appliances, perfume, and even clothes that most people would prefer to pick out themselves or perhaps not even want at all.
This year, shop outside of the box and give a meaningful and thoughtful gift.
Here are a few gift- giving ideas:
- Give a gift that lasts forever. Have a tree planted in their honor. You will be doing something good for the earth and you won’t have to wrap it.
- Donate to their (or your) favorite charity.
- Purchase tickets for an event, concert, or tour for two. (make it something you like in case they invite you along)
- Gift an annual membership to their local park, museum, nature center, or aquarium.
- If you enjoy baking, make some Christmas cookies! Tuck a little note inside that the recipient can share them with company, bring to their next party or eat them all if they wish.
- If you do wish to purchase an item to give, look for consumable, sustainably harvested gifts such as a clean-burning candle , a holiday hand soap, or a treat from a small local bakery or candy store. I love supporting the small businesses in my area.
- Consider sending the gift of fresh and healthy food that is ready to eat right to a loved one’s front door. Mason jars with gorgeous salads, hearty breakfast bowls, and even sandwiches delivered ready-made. Check out Farmers Fridge for a unique and appreciated gift.
Wishing you and yours a Merry (and clutter-free) Christmas!
